I write for the Quarterly Newsletter of the Minnesota division of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
Elizabeth is a gem, and a rare one at that. We are lucky to have her
regular columns in our newsletter. She provides insightful, relevant,
and immediately applicable information to our members about the business
and marketing part of our practice, and she even does it without seeming
like a business marketer! And it doesn't hurt that she is the daughter
of Minnesota's own Bill Doherty, and appears to share in his enthusiasm
for systems thinking and good, common sense ideas.
My very first published writing was at age 14, to the Psychotherapy Networker magazine. I was sitting in my dad's office when he threw me the magazine and said, "this is about your people." It was a dark cover of three or four rebelious looking teens. I read the magazine and was offended, sad, frustrated, annoyed. Here was another portrayl of the "bad teenagers" made public. I wrote a letter to the editor explaing how they should cover the GOOD things teens do and the positive actions they make.
The second published writing, much to my annoyance, was on a plane heading to Scotland for the summer in college. My dad insisted I had to write a response since they finally published a new issue with the positive side of teenage-life. And yes, when stuck in the big journal stacks at the library (psychology undergrad) I sometimes went to find that magazine issue from about 1989.
Fast forward several years and now "that editor" is Rich Simon, my amazing writing coach for my two printed articles. And when I edit my father's Psychology Today blogs, he has become impressed and says I'm a lot like Rich with fantastic feedback. Life always comes full circle.
